Consciousness Emerges From Social Coherence | Rupert Sheldrake -- The Extended Mind: Recent Experimental Evidence, Telepathy in Animal Flocks, Pets and Owners, Mothers and Babies, Telephone, and more

by Justin Deschamps

Human beings have long dreamed of fantastic powers like telepathy that seem supernatural or paranormal. And through the pioneering work of Dr. Rupert Sheldrake, discoveries have been made that suggest these things are more commonplace than previously believed. The following is a "recent" presentation of experimental evidence that unequivocally demonstrates that the human mind and other complex lifeforms are capable of what is commonly known as telepathy. But the precedent for extrasensory communication or dynamic group-mind coordination reaches far back into natural history.

Evolution Through Social Coherence

If one looks at the evolution of life on Earth, for billions of years there existed a primordial ocean filled with single-celled microorganisms. These small forms of life appeared on Earth after oceans developed on the surface. Over millions upon millions of years, a slow and progressive terraforming of the Earth took place, turning an initially toxic environment into one teeming with microbial life. Eventually, these single-celled organisms began working together to form multicellular organisms.

Approximately 560 million years ago, the Cambrian Explosion took place, wherein a host of macroscopic life rapidly emerged from seemingly nowhere. In little over 100 million years, many different forms of multicellular life evolved—despite the fact that for over 2 billion years the oceans were filled with nothing more than single-celled microbes. Modern science has yet to explain how these life forms, like insects (arthropods), vertebrates, and complex plant life, all seemed to show up at around the same time. Could it be that after a slow and progressive phase of organization, a kind of group-mind or consciousness that emerged from swarms of single-celled organisms, provided a metaphysical guide that rapidly organized previously individualized units of life into larger living things?

These more complex forms of life, known as flora and fauna (plants and animals) communicate using chemical means and an energetic technique using biophotons. In short, the more organized and coherent these monads of life became, the more they started to work with each other, becoming a host to an emergent intelligence or consciousness.

One theory gaining popularity amongst some researchers is that it is preprogrammed into the evolutionary track of life itself that once enough coherence between organisms takes place (non-destructive social interactions), communication via extrasensory means is possible and becomes the norm. This is essentially what happened to single-celled organisms during the Cambrian Explosion.

The more coherent a community of living things is, the more likely they will behave as if an emergent consciousness is guiding the whole. Consider that the human body is a community of over 37 trillion cells, all working together in a sublime harmony of coordinated action that is indwelt by an emergent consciousness—a human personality.

Extended Mind Observations

While the notion of governing consciousness emerging from communal organizations of living things is not well acknowledged, there are many examples of what has been called extended mind in nature.

Sheldrake provides several examples of this like flocks of animals, such as fish, birds, and insects, which coordinate their movements with incredible precision and acuity. Skeptics assume that this is merely an example of rapid sensory adjustment. However, the nervous system is far too slow to account for such quick changes in group action but extrasensory—somewhat instantaneous—communication or perception can explain how these swarms of animals can so expertly move about as if controlled by a singular mind.

Here are a flock of starlings gracefully flying through the air, demonstrating a group coordination that appears so fluid even the person filming them suggests it looks like a "monster."

While it is little understood in mainstream science, the HeartMath Institute has experimentally demonstrated that human beings are most definitely capable of precognition, showing that the heart reacts to emotionally charged stimuli before it is perceived by the mind.

The HeartMath study suggests that information is accessible via an extrasensory mechanism, and that emotional charge or coherence seems to be a factor. Experimenters observed that the heart rate of certain images that triggered an emotional response occurred before the image appears on screen. But perhaps all images were registered precognitively, yet only ones that had an emotional significance would be noticed while others would not trigger a response.

Emotional Coherence and Extended Mind

Sheldrake's findings correlate with the premise of emotional coherence in that complex animal life that possesses the capacity for bonding is capable of telepathic communications. Cats and dogs that have a strong bond with their owners are more likely to exhibit extended-mind behaviors, as well as mothers and their children that obviously have a deep connection to each other.

And if one considers that unselfish pure love is the thing cells exchange in order to cooperate within a multicellular organism, then perhaps as human beings learn to love and forgive each other—in the same way a mother loves her child—more telepathic phenomena will emerge within humanity.

Could it be that the extended-mind or telepathy phenomenon is an emergent property with higher order life forms as they gain social coherence, just like cells did during the Cambrian Explosion? And that as coherence between organisms increases—whether human or otherwise—telepathic communication also increases?

Unfortunately, due to the fact that so-called scientific institutions regard this type of research as taboo, there are few investigations to draw from to answer these questions. However, if one studies an even more fringe set of information provided by the field of ufology and mediumship, there are insights that offer venues of further contemplation.

Telepathy in Extraterrestrial Societies

There is an inordinate amount of anecdotes, alleged extraterrestrial communications, and secret government studies into the notion human beings are capable of telepathy. One such work, the Law of One channelings or Ra Material, received in the early 1980s from a group called L/L Research, suggests that the destiny of living creatures as they become more intelligent is telepathic communication. The information was received by way of mediumship or channeling, where a subject enters a trance-like state and a telepathic communication occurs, provided a specific technique of establishing such was employed.

What's more, the idea of an emergent group mind, which Sheldrake discusses as a kind of new governing personality that seems to spring up from socially coherent living organisms, is referred to as a social memory complex in the Law of One material.

Ra, the entity that made contact with the researchers, says that as human beings increase their capacity for unselfish love and eliminate bellicose behavior, telepathic communication becomes more widespread. Furthermore, once the whole of humanity has set aside their differences and begins working together on a grand unified front, a planetary consciousness will emerge. In essence, human beings will one day form monads of a planetary consciousness that co-creatively joins with the whole human race, and possibly other life forms.
11.17 Questioner: At what stage does a planet achieve social memory?

Ra: I am Ra. A mind/body/spirit social complex becomes a social memory complex when its entire group of entities are of one orientation or seeking. The group memory lost to the individuals in the roots of the tree of mind then become[s] known to the social complex, thus creating a social memory complex. The advantages of this complex are the relative lack of distortion in understanding the social beingness and the relative lack of distortion in pursuing the direction of seeking, for all understanding/distortions are available to the entities of the society.
The Ra Material is one out of a litany of such works that infer telepathic communication and the emergence of a planetary consciousness is a part of cosmic evolution. And if one considers the theme of evolutionary dynamics on Earth, it becomes clear that this is likely to occur. Human beings, seem to be a new form of single-celled organisms (the monads of Gaia-Sophia), one capable of interfacing with what Ra describes as a social memory complex. But given the divided state of humanity, realizing such an interface cannot occur unless reconciliation at a huge scale takes place. In short, the human organism must unite and find the courage to set-aside petty differences to become the human family, which will likely have effects that contemporary science can't even imagine.

Of course, these ideas are so far beyond the norm of accepted views about life, what the mind is, and how evolution works, that many dismiss these notions of planetary telepathy and commonplace extrasensory communication as unfounded fantasy. However, if one takes the time to familiarize themselves with the experimental data presented below, as well as related data points gathered by a wide range of researchers, it appears that one day humanity could indeed find themselves in a world where telepathic communication is the norm.

Also, consider the preponderance of alleged extraterrestrial contacts and related declassified documents (such as those released by the FBI), which suggest that advanced spacefaring species are almost all telepathic in nature. If one considers that coherence of consciousness is a factor, that when people work together and form intimate bonds, they become more telepathically linked, then imagine a civilization that long ago set aside war, social division, and prejudice to form a grand unified population. If that proposition is correct, the mechanics of objective morality are most likely the science for achieving such a state of social coherence, where love and cooperation are just as precisely defined as engineering and technology are today.

The level of bonding operating in such a social environment is almost unimaginable within a contemporary earthly context. But if a mother can know that her child is in need (which Sheldrake reveals), then imagine if everyone on Earth had an equivalent bond formed with all people as an innate part of human life. In such a setting, it seems (given what is presented below) that telepathy is not only possible but highly likely. And such a society would be capable of working together at levels that make current modes of human organization seem like a random rabble of cavemen.

In the future, human beings could create more in one day than all previous generations combined, simply because personal differences and illusory divisions of race, culture, class, and creed have been dispelled. In such a society, according to the data sources available, individuality would still exist, yet the ability to work with others in a kind of grand symphony of co-creative enterprises would be well-nigh limitless. Not to mention that once the planetary consciousness emerges—the social memory complex discussed by Ra—there could be an exponential increase in perception and coordinated action, a sense of purpose and ability to achieve it that contemporary societies cannot fathom.

Fallacious Dismissal of Extended Mind Observations and Research

Sheldrake's methods are well within accepted scientific standards and have clearly revealed that extended mind phenomenon exists. The fact that these studies have not been acknowledged by his peers or society at large, does not in the least detract from their validity.

As readers and researchers of such information, one mustn't fall prey to the argument from ignorance fallacy—the idea that because no official studies have been done or observations have been made, there is proof of something's non-existence. Quite the contrary, what remains unknown still operates beyond the limits of perception, and only those foolish enough to assume they know it all can be so dogmatically skeptical.

As an example of this fallacy, Cleve Backster's pioneering study into what he called primary perception, was entirely dismissed by academia—even though he was able to demonstrate communication between plants and microorganisms was taking place.

As was said to Horatio in Shakespeare's Hamlet:
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
- Hamlet (1.5.167-8), Hamlet to Horatio
In other words, assuming absolute knowledge about something—that one knows it all—prevents the mind from seeing emergent or unacknowledged phenomena. Therefore, for those who seek to understand the mysteries of existence, keeping an open mind is essential.

ABSTRACT

We have been brought up to believe that the mind is located inside the head. But there are good reasons for thinking that this view is too limited. Recent experimental results show that people can influence others at a distance just by looking at them, even if they look from behind and if all sensory clues are eliminated. And people's intentions can be detected by animals from miles away. The commonest kind of non-local interaction mental influence occurs in connection with telephone calls, where most people have had the experience of thinking of someone shortly before they ring. Controlled, randomized tests on telephone telepathy have given highly significant positive results. Research techniques have now been automated and experiments on telepathy are now being conducted through the internet and cell phones, enabling widespread participation.
